Full Version: Puberty in SPD girl - advice?

I have a 11 year girl who got get periods. She has some SPD/Asperger/anxiety issues which we have learned to manage over the years. However, the PMS and the sensory issues that come with the periods are VERY stressful for her. She is having full meltdowns about the whole thing.
Now, I know that over time it will get better but for now - do you have any advice?
She hates the pads, she hates how she feels, she hates the discomfort ... Herbs, medication, more comfortable pads, anything? I talk to her, reassure her, help her, support her but she still hates it.
i know i had a similar issue myself with pads. i can only wear ultra thin liners. i know some places sell liners made for teens and young girls and those are normally much smaller. also if she doesnt bleed too heavy i would see if she would just use toilet paper folded up several times. it's not a GREAT option since they can fall out and still leak but i know i use to do that alot growing up and it kinda out me outta hating them.

also i dont know if tampons would be any good for her but i found OBS (the ones you put in yourself) are SO MUCH BETTER then the ones with applicators, for some reason they also place it oddly inside and putting the plastic in me grosses me out but for some reason the OB's never did bug me.

Hi, I'm a young adult with SPD. I struggle with some sensory issues related to periods too. I can't stand using tampons or plastic pads because they just feel uncomfortable on my skin. I've ended up settling on cloth pads because the materials irritate me less, although they can be pretty bulky. My mom makes mine (with cool fabrics!) but there are tons of them on etsy and the web (like these:http://www.etsy.com/listing/77432706/panty-liners-set-of-4-reusable-cloth?ref=related-0) I also take cramp bark (along with Ibuprofen) to help alleviate my PMS and cramps.
I experience a lot of heightened sensory issues during my period and PMS and I've really haven't found a good solution to that other than setting plenty of quiet time aside for myself and doing calming things like taking frequent hot showers.
