1. What brings you here? Hello everyone, I am Yorelle. I have a 2 year old son Liam, who was diagnosed with SPD just 5 days ago. With these 5 days, I am googling and researching all I can possibly do and I don't think I have taken my fingers off these keys all week. I am glad I found a place for support, and people who are going through the same thing.
2. What is your relations to someone with SPD? Do you have it? a child of yours? Do you treat SPD kids as a professional? My 2 year old son Liam has it.
3. Share a little of your journey if you'd like. Well, I have always noticed a little something about Liam. Mostly cranky, tantrum-prone and aggressive toward other kids. But recently, his Dad and I started really paying attention to all of the things that were a little abnormal about our little boy. Speech, occupational and Behavioral therapy starts Monday this week.
4. Is there any immediate help you need? I would just like to know how to deal, how to explain to my family that is completely in denial and thinks I made it up and I'm a "hypochondriac". Also, how to help his father, who is used to a violent and rough upbringing, is 6'2 and 250 lbs and doesn't get the point that yelling scared him, spanking makes it worse, and you have to actually be gentle. Also, how to get him to not hit every kid he sees, bite, and have tantrums in every place that is not a home environment.
5. SPD doesn't run your life! What are you or your child's gifts? Interests? Liam is extremely intelligent. The OT said he is functioning otherwise on a 3 and a half year old level and is doing things that she cannot believe. He is brilliant. Loves art, loves trains, cars and anything powered. His favorite shows are Little Einsteins, Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.
6. What do you like to do in your spare time? Any hobbies or interests?
In my spare time, I create project ideas for Liam. I love to take pictures, and am an amateur photographer, Liam is of course my main client
