hello i am a young mother of a soon to be 3yr old boy he was just recently diagnosed with alot of disorders and one of them is spd. unforstantly i still dont understand what it is and i think they r wrong cuz therapy isnt working. so my baby is getting worse he is now in ot twice a week and he keeps spinning and bashing his head and now he is back to holding his cars to his check and spinning the wheels... ive tried everything that i can at home and i dont know what else to do... oh and hes back to not wanting to eat and not falling asleep very well.. if anyone has some kind of suggestions im willing to take them cuz i dont know what else to do for him to help level him out
I'm glad to meet you! I'm sorry you're having such serious issues now and so urgently need help. I wish I knew something helpful, but I will say that, for me, the "therapy" that I'm doing doesn't always seem to help right at first because I'm getting used to feeling something new, and that new thing sets off more defensiveness. Having said that, have you tried calling your OT? If your son is getting therapy now, they really should know that it is being very counterproductive for him right now. I know you don't want him to get dangerously unbalanced, especially since he's doing coping behaviors that can be physically damaging.

Please call your doctor and/or OT. At the very least, they should give you some coping strategies or some information to help, since they should know his specific needs. And be sure to have times, frequencies, good descriptions of behaviors. Hopefully, that will help them. hug
Sounds like your son needs more physical input. Have you tried a wieghted blanket or coat for him to wear to calm him down?
If it's input he needs, you might also see if you can get him to jump or fall on a beanbag or cushion.
thank you for the sugestions but i cant aford the weighted vest that he needs and i have talked to his ot and she said she is going to try to find something that we can do at home to help him get what he is seeking for, we have tried the crashing and the jumping and the running. we have even rapped him in blankets 5 times a day just to get him back and hes still off.. i dont know i wish he could tell me what it is thats bothering him so i can help him
It is possible to make your own weighted vests and blankets if you can sew. This lowers the costs of these items significantly.

Hello,
We are new to this too! I have been trying different things at home and my son is a sensory seeker. Our OT reccomended to rub his arms, legs, and back with alot of pressure (kind of like a massage). I have been trying to do it when he seems to be having a meltdown and he loves it. He rolls on his back and just smiles, I think it is a good release for him. We also have this big bouncy ball we got at Target for a couple bucks and he likes when I sit him on top of it, hold it in place and bounce him on it. Like I said, we are new as well but these are just a few tricks that have been working for us. Good luck!
well we tried the big ball but with in a few hrs he managed to bust it.. the massages only work at bed time and most of the time they seem to not really be helping... his ot highly sugest a vest we tried a backpack but he wouldnt keep it on.. we have to up his heavey activity and his structure time... it seems to be alot of trial and error with this boy i wish we could just find one thing that will help him
I know how you feel. Brody likes heavy work, like pushing things across the room etc. I will give him a rather heavy cardboard box and let him push it back and forth in the room. I also take the pillows off of the couch and line them up for him to jump on, it seems to get his energy out. I am always trying to come up with new things with him that we just have around the house so I am not running out and buying new things all the time. And this sounds wierd but he loves putting the heavy wet clothes from the washer to the dryer, I just take them out and hand them to him and let him put them in the dryer for me. I am by no means an expert, it's just trial and error for us too. I just thought I could throw some other ideas out for you Smile
appreciate the ideas cuz im at my whits end with this boy i just seems no matter what i do it just aint working.. it works for like 5 min then hes back to being him. in a hole day i might get 10 mins of calm and relaxation from him the rest of the day besides nap and bed he is running spinning and yelling all over the place...
