Hi all,

My name is Hope and I have a seven year old who has SPD. He was evaluated in pre k because the teacher said he had attention issues. At the evaluation they said he had SPD, but didn't really ellaborate and I kind of thought it was just what they called 'attention' problems when they weren't sure what to say Confused

Anyway, since then he has been receiving OT through his elementary school but has continued to have focus issues. He has had a lot of trouble writing, reads very slowly and has low muscle tone. His teachers have been suggesting he has ADD. I have not been able to afford a neuro psych evaluation, but was able to get him into a study at a local college for SPD and ADD. We started the first of the three day process on Friday. I don't have any written reports, but so far they have confirmed that he has SPD. He has visual scanning issues with his reading, can not focus with any background noise, has motor planning issues, has a very heightened sense of smell and has trouble recognizing all the sounds in words when trying to write.

Anyway, I'm still in the middle of it and not sure what to do with all of this information. I now also suspect that my younger son has it too.

Other than that, my son loves to draw (and is very good at it!), is very social and very funny. I'm hoping that we find the right tools/ people to help him. I can see that he is shutting down at school already.

In addition to this, my son has a gastro intestinal disorder, food allergies and asthma. It's been a lovely, but rocky journey so far.

I'm happy to meet you all and learn more about SPD.

Welcome to the site HopeM Smile

So happy that you found us. I am also a mother of 3 SPD kiddo's myself. So if you suspect your younger has SPD, it could be a good possibility because it does run in families. I myself also have SPD as well as my sisters and both of my parents. We are one big sensory family lol.

With your older son, there is a sub category for SPD called Sensory Discrimination that can include visual and auditory. I have had some concerns with my oldest daughter. She also has ADHD and I am pulling teeth for them to look into other options other than just ADHD (Which she is a classic ADHD case btw lol) So I can totally sympathize with you on how hard it is.

Feel free to get ahold of me if you ever want to talk or have any questions Smile
Thank you so much, Heather!

I will start reading up on Sensory Discrimination. As I said, I don't have written reports yet but I'm sure they'll mention that on the report as they were telling me that the reading and writing issues were all connected with his SPD.

My other son has a lot of outbursts and can't handle unexpected noises. He also wants to be held all the time. I think I will have him evaluated too. Also, as I was filling out the pages of questions for the study, I realized that I think I have sensory issues myself.

I'm still not sure if they will say my son also has ADHD, but more will be revealed Smile.

I appreciate you reaching out, and will probably get a hold of you during this process.

If you haven't read the book Sensational Kids, I recommend it for your situation. It's not one of those books you can read on one big sitting, but if you pick away at it a little at a time, you can learn a lot about SPD and ways to help your son. We're glad you joined us!

Thank you for the suggestion. I will get this book.
