Sleeping - jdefyingravity - 01-05-2011

I've got another question for the fabulous set of guru's on this site!

One of the many things that prevents me from easily falling asleep is the noise of my hair scratching against my pillow. In the past I've put a towel over my pillowcase and it seems to help some.

Any other suggestions? Actually, any falling asleep suggestions would be excellent. Once I'm asleep, I'm pretty good...but getting there is tough.

My sons have trouble falling asleep but I'm not sure if they are bothered by the noise of their hair against the pillow or not.

We've done a CD of ocean waves or use a fan (both as white noise). I bought them both weighted blankets. I've given them melatonin.

But as for specifically for the sound of your hair, mmm, what about some sort of sleeping cap/hat? Or would you get too warm? Otherwise, covering the pillow with something, like the towel, is the only other thing I can think of!

Good luck!

RE: Sleeping - Sila - 01-05-2011

I usually have a box fan on medium/high for white noise to drown out everything else. It helps enough for me, I can get to sleep usually if my body isn't physically bugging me for something. Tongue

Lynn, wearing a hat is an interesting idea! I will give that a try.

I will also look into getting a fan, or getting some white noise/ocean music.

I would love a weighted blanket, but I get unusually hot really quickly. Is the weighted blanket heavier fabric as well as weight? If I could have one that was made out of light fabric, I might be able to tolerate it.

Thank you both!

Jaimie

Jaimie, the weighted blankets can be made to order. And at the prices they go for, they need to be! Smile That said, I know Sila has one that is lightweight for the same reason, and she really likes hers. I'm sure she'll come around and tell you about it.

White noise is what I have to do. I remember it really surprised my OT when, as she was testing me to see if I could tell if my arm was bent or not, I told her that I could tell by hearing it move. lol I can't sleep with music or television, but air conditioner or fan works well for me. Sometimes I won't hear it as much when my hair is wet. Also, I have the fuzzy covers on my pillows (they are the memory foam pillows, so they have nice covers). I find that muffles a lot of movement sound.

As for just general getting to sleep, I have some luck when I'm having trouble if I put my neck weight on. Also, I tend to do progressive relaxation from the toes up. You know, where you repeat to yourself that such and such body part is relaxing and move up. That and meditation help me a good bit, but I've been practicing that for years. It's definitely worth a try.

I'm liking this thread; let's keep the suggestions coming!

Sarah is right, I have a weighted blanket and I love it :3 I live in Florida so I get hot easily too, I used to layer blankets but that made it hard to get to sleep because of the heat. My weighted blanket is made of a light fabric, I think cotton, and it seems like it has some sort of thin padding inside around the rocks, which are evenly spread out around the blanket. There's a few inches on the sides that are unweighted, I personally don't like that much but it's useful if you get one to cover your bed- the unweighted sides can hang off the bed without pulling the blanket down. I don't sleep alone in my bed, so I just have the blanket covering me only Tongue

It was only about $124 for a 15 lb 42 x 60" blanket. I think I might look into getting a weighted/compression vest around feburary, depending on how school goes for me.

RE: Sleeping - LynnNBoys - 01-05-2011

I bought the weighted blankets for my boys at DreamCatcher website http://www.weightedblanket.net/ You can get custom blanket and pick any fabric. I got a 5 lb blanket for my younger son and an 8 lb blanket for my older son. My younger son does get hot sometimes so then I just cover his legs not his torso. He likes the fan on more than my older son.

For me, I don't have much trouble falling asleep. But the sound of my dog licking will wake me up out of dead sleep. It's like nails on a chalkboard and i can't fall asleep again unless I make him stop.

RE: Sleeping - jdefyingravity - 01-05-2011

Hmmm, I'm thinking a weighted blanket for a birthday present Wink

I have tried the progressive muscle relaxation, but I'm not the most consistent...oops. Wet hair is ok, but I can't stand the feeling of wet hair on my neck (yuck!)

RE: Sleeping - mawkinberd - 01-05-2011

Ah... my hair is short enough that it doesn't really get on my neck wet much. I find that, since my SPD symptoms have really gotten worse, that the longer hair is a challenge. I'm just now trying to start over again growing my hair; we'll see how it goes.

I want to make myself a weighted blanket. Hopefully, I'll get to that point before too long. Smile

RE: Sleeping - jdefyingravity - 01-05-2011

I hate to spend all that money on a weighted blanket and then have it be too hot (or just not help!)...
