"stimming" or stereopathies - owensmum - 03-03-2012

anyone elses kid stim or indeed does anyone else experience this?

Owens got to a point that he had an EEG and was seen by the epilepsy consultant. Confirmed no epilepsy but definitely stereopathies or "stimming"

Not quite sure what purpose they serve or how to explain them to school - who at the minute think they are him getting angry... Dont know if its a sign of sensory overload or if hes actually somehow giving himself sensory input?

I stim quite a bit. When I an getting overwhelmed I twirl my hair and jiggle my legs. When I am seriously overwhelmed I rock back and forth. They provide comfort by self soothing. Otherwise I can end up so overwhelmed and anxious that I scream and cry. Very embarrassing in a 40 year old woman. I started stimming around two years old and do it everyday day. Although doing the ot has reduced its frequency and intensity. Stimming is really a good way for me to help remain calm. It can look a little weird but it really does help.

Thanks Raven Smile

Owens literally look like a seizure as he stops goes rigid and shakes, he does it in his sleep too and at their worst if hes standing up his arms go back and hes doubled over ... I guess its good that hes developing some sort of self regulation ... no matter how bizarre bless him

I also stim. I rock, I flap with my hands, make rounds, etc. And ofcourse it's good if you can find a sort of selfregulation but I learned at a young age to supress it. Just because people make fun of it, think you're an idiot, etc. Since a few years it's oké for me to stim when other people are around. But only the people who accept me for who I am and truly understand why I stim.
If I'm at places where I can't stim I have a big problem and pressure is building up inside me. And If it takes to long before I am at a place where I can stim I get restless and mad. In the wordt case I'll explode.

RE: "stimming" or stereopathies - owensmum - 03-05-2012

humm - i wonder if his shaking is him containing something. Thing is - he stims worse when hes having daily metdowns, so the question is when he has a good spell without many meltdowns then is he actually doing something else I wonder thats venting it better and why does h do that for a while then revert to shaking... wouldnt it be great if we could see inside peoples heads and figure out whats going on eh!

RE: "stimming" or stereopathies - beck7422 - 03-06-2012

Is it on purpose or unconscious. Since he does it in his sleep you do need to have your son checked for Neuromuscular disorders. Those can cause involuntary muscle spasms.

I often tap my right leg. I am rarely conscious about it unless someone asks who is shaking the table. I have a foot rest that moves with my feet as they bounce up and down.

I don't know the line between SPD and my Ion Channel Disorder Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis lies in terms of my muscle spasms. They both seem to play a part. If I get chilled, my muscle spasming gets so violent that my shoulder ends up hitting my head repeatedly. Talk about embarrassing to have happen in customer meetings.

RE: "stimming" or stereopathies - owensmum - 03-06-2012

it is unconcious and yea he does it in his sleep and it stops him mid track and he doesnt know hes done it. He'll just pause when walking shake then carry on again... I figured as he'd had an EEG that it was a "nothing to worry about" kinda thing because the brainscan was fine but I do feel in myself I am not hapy that its an innocent "tic". I will look up that disorder beck and ask his peadiatrician when we finally get another appointment. thankyou.

Just seems odd that if its a regulation thing then why would he do it mor when hes worse I'd expext the more he did it the less explosie his behaviour was...

someone needs to dvelop them scanner things off star trec that just instantly diagnose everything!

RE: "stimming" or stereopathies - beck7422 - 03-07-2012

The Periodic Paralyses are fairly rare, so I rarely suggest that another person has it. When I do there are many more signs than just muscle spasms in a person's posting. Often very specific food related observations.

An EEG will not detect many of the Neuromuscular disorders. Most aren't fatal just annoying, but knowing what is causing the spasms helps a lot when you are older.

Your best bet is to see a Pediatric Neurologist. A 24 hour Urine Test would actually be a great test in eliminating several of the disorders that cause Muscle spasms. The sign of a rare good Neurologist is one who orders that test early on. It is fairly easy to do the 24 hour Urine Test. The hardest part is you need refrigeration access for those 24 hours and you have to remember to put all your pee in it.

Some medications, especially ADHD meds, can cause tics and muscle spasms. However, this usually takes a few years to develop.

humm, wont hold my breath on being referred! Altho saying that I am going to ask for a private referral for an MRI if the NHS wont do one for us as my boy has had a flat head since he was a baby and its never been looked at so I wonder if the threat of having that looked at privately will make them investigate some more. Funnily enough when school found out on the grapevine from another parent I was seeing a private educational psycologist they all of a sudden decided they needed to get theirs in
