Stomach Pain - sparklepanda - 12-27-2012

Hiya, my son has been dealing with stomach cramps on & off since he was old enough to tell us, and probably before then too. It sounds weird, but eating on an empty stomach seems to be the worst for him. They just come out of the blue, last a while them go away, but its several times a wee k.Has anyone else has experience with this? He is lactose intolerant like my husband & we have him on lactose-free milk. With so many spd kids having issues with eating, or foods intolerance s, I wonder if its connected somehow.

Has he been tested for gluten intolerance. The symptoms sound a lot like Celiac disease.

No he hasn't. I get the same sort of pain sporadically, bad enough top uncapacitate me for an hour. Will speak to gp next weekat our appointment. Wouldn't that happen just after eating bread though? He is ok with carbs mostly. Fruit does it sometimes. There seems to be no pattern, more with me. We are both mysteries!

Gluten is hidden in so many things you would be shocked, so you can't assume it's just bread. My daughter in law is so sensitive, she gets a reaction from foods that are processed in the same facility as those with gluten. People with Celiac Disease also have varying levels of sensitivity, so both you and your child could have it and get different reactions to the same food. It's a pretty easy blood test, so if you're seeing your GP next week, you should definitely ask for the test. Best wishes that it will be negative. There are many other possibilities as well, besides Celiac.

Hi SparkePanda, Yes, my Michael whom is also lactose intolorant (mild and mostly grown out of), has had on and off stomach pain since he could talk as well. I have talked about it extensively with his doctor whom is not concerend. Over the years, I have chalked it up to his rather "type A", personality that goes along with his sensory issues. I think some of these kids are walking around a little more "tightly wound" then the most of us. If they are not yet comfortable in their bodies or surroundings, I have to believe that this is also internalized phyically. Think about it....when you are upset, worried, how does your stomach feel? I usually lose my appetite, or get a stomachache myself. So eating for a sensory kid might easily set off stomach pains. I don't push Michael to eat big meals...quite frankly, he can't eat big meals...stomach aches....MY advice, talk to your doc just to make sure their is not any otherthing going on, (im sure you already have), otherwise, try not to worry about it too much. As he becomes more sensory regulated, chances are his stomach pains will lesson. qannie47

I used to have the same issue, especially with school lunch food. But I don't have any food allergies. Id feel so sick every day at school lunch. I know all fast food stuff gives me the same terrible tummy ache. Eating a "normal sized" meal that fills me sufficiently will make me sick, I have to snack throughout the day and only ever eat one slightly less than normal sized meal a day. In a day ill have a bowl of cereal, then later on maybe a snack like fruit or a pop tart. I'll snack like that until a little past dinner time ill have whatever my fiancé is eating, but again, in moderation. I know that two slices of pizza is what will make me feel fully full- but in a short time I'd need to go lie down. So I'll only eat one. I cannot eat a "full balanced meal" because its too much, if I'm being served salad and dinner I can only choose one of them. Flavors need to cause a different sensation, the same exact taste for more than three bites will make me feel a little sick. If I need to, I'll use three different dips just so my food tastes a little different each bite. Oh and also having a flavorful drink helps when it's impossible for me to have multiple flavors on my plate.

I dunno if any of this is applicable to your son, but I sure hope you can figure out what it is sooner than later. Good luck Smile

Sparklepanda: Any answers yet?

RE: Stomach Pain - sparklepanda - 02-02-2013

thanks for your responses. I've managed to get him on a waiting list at our children's hospital, but the appointment isnt until July. I will ask about the blood test for coeliac disease, since its such a simple way to rule out something so major. I had no idea you could diagnose it that way. Seeing the dr in a couple of days anyway to do all the paperwork for his OT assessment.
