Favorite Sport - Dani - 08-25-2010

So, any sports fans on here? Any particular favorite sport?

Mine's hockey, particularly ice hockey, but any variant will do. I watch it on TV a lot, play it personally, play hockey video games, research it, collect memorabilia from it, and write about it. It's actually been a fixation of mine for years.

Anyone else have a favorite? Doesn't have to be a fixation like mine is, but just something you enjoy doing or watching perhaps?

RE: Favorite Sport - mawkinberd - 08-26-2010

You know, I discovered a passion for playing tennis when I was in high school. Very surprising to me and all the people around me, mainly because I was (and still am) known as the uncoordinated, slow person. What I found out was that my high degree of hand/eye coordination really served me (no pun intended!) well in tennis, since it kept me from having to run around as much as some of the other girls. One of the proudest moments of my life was facing down this (pardon me, but I'm being blunt here) skinny, athletic young woman who obviously felt as though there would be no contest between us and not just winning but kicking tail. Man, in a life where my body just didn't seem to cut the mustard, this was an important moment for me.

Um, yeah. Watching sports, not so much. If I'm roped into watching something with a group (like this football season, go Saints! LOL), I can and do enjoy the athleticism and the friendly jeering and cheering, but I don't seek it out for myself. I figure it's the last vestiges of tribal warfare, done safely on screen or on field, which is just fine with me, since I'm not really made for war, tribal or otherwise. lol

Sports that I can play still: Ping Pong, Pool, Tennis (very short period of time), Badmitton.

As long as I am not tired, my hand/eye coordination and my knowledge of angles allows me to destroy my opponents.

Unfortunately, I tire quickly. So I have 5-15 minutes that I am capable of "playing" a sport. The longer I play (like the 15 minute mark), the more likely I will full body paralyze and lose all hand/eye coordination skills. Having to bend over for any reason speeds up how fast before I go down.

As for watching sports, I like watching sports live in person. I dislike watching sports on a TV no matter how large it is. I "steal" energy from the crowd at sporting events and get a natural high off of it. Last year I went to a College American Football game. It was wonderful, especially since I brought my scooter and was able to park it into the handicap seat location. This allowed me a chair that fit my sensory and paralysis needs much better than the standard statium bench would have. I could not have handled being crunched in the crowd on the benches. The crowded benches would have triggered a panic attack.

Oh goodness, I know what you mean. You would *hate* Michigan Stadium, where U of M plays. I've been there a couple times, and the thing seats over 110,000 people at every game. To make matters worse, when I 'sat' in the student section (where I was the one time I went), we didn't really sit. No, all thousands upon thousands of students were standing on the bleachers, yelling and screaming. Needless to say, I didn't make it through the game there, lol.

I love going to see the Red Wings play though, as I am a huge hockey fan, but that arena can be quite deafening. Last time I went there for a game, they blared the horn every time someone scored. It was a college game, and one team really sucked, so the final score was 12-3 or something. By the time I got out of there, I was beyond total overload, even with ear buds to help. Both ears were beat red, and one was even turning purple! (Red is a classic sign of auditory overload) It literally burned the whole rest of the night, and I needed to use ice.

I take it playing Madden 10 on the 360 does not count. Ah, well. :-P

I sometimes enjoy watching the Seahawks play, but ever since they got cheated at the Super Bowl a few years ago, they went downhill very quickly.

RE: Favorite Sport - beck7422 - 08-31-2010

Digit, actually the stadium I saw the College Football Game at WAS University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. Smile

Being in the Handicap area versus the crowded benches for "normal" people made all the difference.

I get a natural "high" off other people's cheers, so in that case my body craves that sensory overload.

I would have had a harder time being near the band, but I was far enough for it to not cause me a problem.

Not a huge sports fan but I do really like dragon boating and outrigger canoeing. Got into it about 5 years ago and absolutely love it.

RE: Favorite Sport - Taseera - 10-19-2010

I like many sports but my favorite sport is Swimming .

RE: Favorite Sport - Near - 03-07-2011

Well, I'm going to be necroing this topic Tongue

So, I currently fence (more specifically, I do sabre with some épée on the side). I also used to do swimming (I was even a lifeguard at one point) and cross country running too, while when I was younger still I played and reffed Football (Soccer).

As for watching, oh gawd, what do I not enjoy watching? I'm a big, big fan of the Olympics (like, about the same calibre of insanity that Dan has towards Hockey), and I watch Biathlon, Bobsled, Skeleton, Alpine Skiing and other niche sports as often as possible. I also LOVE to watch Handball, but it's never on TV outside of the Olympics (and even then, it's hard to find). I also like watching Football (Soccer) and Hockey, but not as much as Handball ^^.

RE: Favorite Sport - Catherine - 03-08-2011

I did a bit of fencing (Foil) in highschool. I have horrible depth perception and hand eye coordination so I was never any good, but I did enjoy it.
