We have a son 6.5 yrs old, diagnosed with SPD 12 months ago. We also have a daughter 12 yrs old. I'm here as I wanted to speak with people who have an understanding of what it is like to have a child with SPD. I understand that most people have no knowledge of it, but I have questions that others who are going through the same thing may have answers to. My son is clever, loving with a great sense of humour but can switch to being having a meltdown, being immature, aggressive and stubborn within the space of 30 seconds. I understand that this is part of SPD and hopefully this site can help or at least allow me to discuss his difficulties with people who have some understanding of how we feel.

Welcome!! I'm sure we all can relate to your son's experiences. It is hard for people to understand isn't it?

Hi! I'm new here as well, but like Angela said, I'm sure we can all relate to your son's experiences. I struggle with other people understanding, too. It can frustrate me to no end. ESPECIALLY when they just brush it off as nothing more than my kid being "overly sensitive". Ummm, no....it's a very serious issue.(in my opinion, of course )

Thanks for your kind replies. I also struggle with my frustrations especially when people are making comments such as "he's immature, isn't he?" in front of him or saying "if you were mine...." I understand it is hard for people as they only see SPD children as being "bold". You're right, it is a serious issue and takes some patience and alot of time not only with the children. Hopefully, I can gets others insight into it.....

Welcome! Your son sounds a bit like my younger son. He is so loving and sensitive, gives me a dozen hugs and kisses every day, but then can turn around and have a complete meltdown.
It's so difficult when others make comments when they truly don't understand the situation.

Welcome! That sounds exactly like my Samuel (he'll be 7 on Tuesday ). My son was just diagnosed so I'm still new to understanding a lot, but I do know my Samuel and have lived with him for almost 7 years.
I've always been understanding of his need for space and to not let him get overwhelmed with kids. Which is hard cuz he has 3 brothers!! But yeah, even with his brothers, he can go from loving and sweet to screaming and hitting and angry in 30 seconds. Drives me crazy!! But we also allow him (and his brothers) but expecially Samuel, to go to our bedroom alone and lock the door if he needs time alone. That often helps because everything is overwhelming him.
I love my loving and sensitive son. But he has his rough side!!
