That is definite the asking permission didn't start until pre-school. My mother got me flushable wipes for him but they did not seem to do the job. Could have just been the brand though. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try supervision again. He has poor balance. I have to hold him to keep him from falling. Same thing for the shower. Baths are easier but he likes feeling like a big boy in the shower. I have to see what I can do. The wheels are always turning. Thank you.

Because of my sons probable fibromyalgia - and other sports related things he has used a shower stool(and its a little shower) to sit down, because of his feet and legs hurting so much. I already had a nice one - that the height is adjustable on - because of my own issues with FM. They can be found at professional pharmacies, that have those types of items, usually geared toward elderly, and more disabled. Just a note!

My daughter has much more success using the toilet, as well as wiping if she has a stool in front of the toilet. She needs the stability because her toes barely touch the floor. I think you'll find he has more success if you keep a stool in front of the toilet. I recently discovered this stool called a Squatty Potty, which slides up against the toilet so it's out of the way for other users. They cost about $35. The research behind them is also quite interesting.

Awe Thank you. I always worry about my little One falling. I'm going to check it out. We tried talking a little about it today. He told me he gives up. I felt so bad. I just said "Don't worry, We'll figure this out." He decided to trust me and try again. These are all wonderful ideas. I'm sure it will be ok.

Hi everyone! I'm Britt, and my son Philip (3 1/2) has SPD. I came across this site looking for some kind of support after having a "bad moment" with my son. He came home from preschool and just had a total meltdown. He started slamming his door repeatedly, throwing things, yelling NO... you know the drill.

I feel like I don't know how to help him. He has no ability to calm down or self-regulate. When he has a bad day, I feel like I'm failing as a Mom. I KNOW he has SPD, but sometimes I need to feel like someone else knows it too. Everyone around us just says the proverbial, "He's a boy" or "He's just 3". Grrrrrrrrrrr!

We've all been there. I can definitely relate to the meltdowns. They can be rough and make one feel helpless but please don't doubt yourself. You are the best for your son. I just joined and in such a short time the parents and information found on this site has helped me so very much. We're here for eachother and I am so glad you found this site too. Welcome

My son is 6 and he has poor fine motor skills and he too has difficulty wiping his bum. In school they say he's fine and doesn't usually ask for help. They don't see his underwear when he gets home.
At home he always yells me to wipe him. I go and look and if I think he can do it himself I say so and he has a go. Sometimes he succeeds but usually I have to clear up afterwards. The wet wipes that go down the toilet are no help to him but I use them when he has made a mess.
Glad to hear they can get there in the end. Don't fancy wiping an 18 yr olds bum thanks as much as I love him.

That was one of my fears. I love reading about the options and possibilities and knowing there are many ways to help my son. It helps me a lot.
