I have diagnosed with ADD by a psychologist this past Jan and still some things aren't right. My husband found SPD a few years ago and we joked that I had it but when I looked it up, I fit a ton of criteria! I think things are getting worse and Im having a heck of a time finding any links or support for ADULT sufferers of this. I don't know what to do to not be frustrated at the littlest things, I avoid snuggling with my husband, I can't have anything tight on my wrists, I have to wear shoes or socks so my feet don't feel anything on the floor, I hate walking on grass, I hate dirty hands and feet, I hate my pony tail touching the back of my neck, I hate it when schedules or plans change, I have to have things in order and color coded, etc.

Im a returning college student and got a 4.0 this semester because I worked my butt off. Im scared that my annoyances are really affecting my marriage though and my overall happiness. Any other adults out there???

There are quite a few adult sufferers on here, but it's rather quiet and might take a while to respond.

There are some checklists available on this site, maybe go through them, but to me it sounds likely that you do have a number of sensory issues.

From what I've read, the lines between ADD/ADHD and SPD are blurring with recent research. There's a big overlap, and a lot of kids with ADD have sensory issues, or full-blown SPD as well.

I think it was TT who recommended in another post that it helps to have a "sensory toolkit" with you. Find things that help - certain kinds of music, chewing gum, fidgets, mints, ummm... will try find the post and link to it for you. There was some really good advice there.

Go easy on yourself, try to keep things quiet and calm and lights dim etc. Give yourself a sensory break.

Yep, adult here. The very best suggestion I can give is try to get evaluated by an occupational therapist who treats SPD. It sounds like a lot of your issues are touch based and an OT will be able to help you deal with that (brushing protocol in particular). In the Occupational Therapy section on here I did a post about how OT has helped me (I was diagnosed back in Jan - 30 years old and had no idea until now).

Find the things you do like the feel of, that calm you down (classical music? running your hands through pebbles? weight on you (a number of blankets, etc.) walking? low noise?), and use those to help you manage your life at the moment. Try to minimise the things that frustrate you. Talk to your husband about it, tell him that you do seem to fit a lot of the criteria and what frustrates you, but it's not 'him' that's the problem - it's likely your hyperactive nervous system.

Ask questions, look through recent posts here, and have a look at the resources/articles linked above the board, and the main site that this is off to educate yourself some more. Also look into the book Too Loud, Too Bright, Too Fast, Too Tight - it's a very illuminating read.

I was diagnosed with ADD as a kid(Now I'm 24) and I'm sure my best friend(23) and I have SPD(both not diagnosed). Her SPD is full blown and I try to take care of her best I can. I've also been looking for an adult support group or active forum. In the meantime I've tried to develop a "sensory diet" for her to make it more bearable.

Hi everyone. I was diagnosed with Somatosensory dyspraxia yesterday. I'm also diagnosed as high functioning autistic.
I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed, happy, knocked sideways and relieved, tearful and hungry to find out more. Just to know there are others with similar things out there, whether as children or adults, is such a relief!! I can't believe I finally have a word for it, now I can find out more and hopefully see how others cope too!

I feel your "pain" because I saw an OT for the first time yesterday. She did a bunch of reflex tests and I didn't pass the ATNR portion. I'm trying to find out how working with that can help my SPD issues. It was one thing to question if I had SPD but now that they've pretty much confirmed it, I'm more freaked out than ever...I dont want to be different. I dont want things to bother me that others dont notice...Wondering how to deal with it.

I am sorry that you are freaked out about being different.But that is understandable you had a shock and you freaked. Plenty of people without sensory processing issues do that. Once you calm down you will find some ways to make yourself a lot better. As for being different that can be fun! How about finding gorgeous long sleeved button down blue purple silk shirts? Thats gorgeous and different. This is a valid excuse to get the exact thread count sheets that you want. After all it medically nessesary.Did you know I took my silk scarf that I don't wear and turned it into a makeshift bra? Its not good for support but it feels heavenly.Our more sensitive senses mean we can appreciate good stuff more deeply.Your gonna love silk. Good luck!
