Hello Everyone! - tania7120 - 09-05-2010 Hello everyone! I am a single mom of a 22 month old with SPD signs she has not been diagnosed as of yet but her therapists already seem to think so. I am a full time college student(associates degree in accounting)as well, and dont work do to therapy schedules at this time. My family live in other states, so I basically have no support here in Denver. We have 2 cats, 1 turtle, 2 bearded dragons to keep us company during the daytime. So far the issues we have to deal with now seem to worry me, but she is making it though day by day Right now eating issues seem to be the biggest issue. She went through almost 2 years of not being a picky eater to almost eating nothing. I cannot get her to eat meat(protein) at all.. Lately she has turned down most meals all together except for her milk. I have tried many ways to get her eating she is still active etc. Maybe someone has an idea for me. Just so indivuals understand here its not just soft or hard foods it is all food in general. She sniffs it and that seems help with her decision as well. But I cant plug her nose during dinner! The other things we are dealing with at this time is spinning in circles, all ceiling fans in the house need to be on, all lights in the house need to be on, she is not talking as of yet except in 3 word sentences not consistently though, now she curls into a ball when it comes to dressing time, hates being changed and kicks the entire time as well, she also has this thing about anything circle either balloons or balls, she cannot tell me what she wants at all, and she has both her therapists confused. We are bringing in an OC here soon to help out as well as a behavioral thing to figure this out. It has gotten to the point if she doesnt get exactly what she wants she throws tantrums and will ignore me for hours on in. There seems to be good days and bad days where it takes forever to get to where you need to go or do something. Thank you all for listening, hope to hear some ideas here Talk to you later! RE: Hello Everyone! - mawkinberd - 09-07-2010 Hi Tania! Nice to meet you and your daughter. Sounds like you have quite a menagerie to keep you company! I don't actually have much advice for you on the behavioral; I'm kind of new to this, and she has different problems than I have. Some people I know have had good results with baby sign language when it comes to communication problems, though; it might be something to look into. I know there are a few sites that have beginning sign for babies available. It sounds like she would appreciate something that would help her communicate more clearly. I'm sorry that you don't have any family nearby to help. Hopefully, we can give you some support. We have some good, generous folks here that know lots of things I don't. RE: Hello Everyone! - beck7422 - 09-10-2010 How long would your daughter go without food if you don't give her exactly what she wants? Normally I wouldn't say something like this, but she needs to find ways to get past her intial revulsion if the food itself isn't harming her in some way. I HATE califlower and brocolli (texture, smell, and taste), but it took me having food allergies to many other foods and those two being "safe" foods for me to voluntarily eat them again. I still reserve the right to make funny faces and rude commentary about either food while attempting to force myself to eat them (I am 33). It would cause me more long term harm (certain vitamins missing from my diet) to not eat them than to eat them due to my very restricted diet. |
