We are generally dairy free because I get a rashy kind of thing if I have too much - I can tolerate small amounts cheese and yoghurt because that is milk that has been altered by enzymes etc where I can't tolerate milk, cream or icecream- the assumption lots of people make is that I must be lactose intolerant but it's not that at all, I don't get the typical abdominal pain/bloating/diarrhoea symptoms of lactose intolerance.
Yes! I have been working my way through Nourishing Traditions and information for the Weston Price foundation and have been learning a lot about stuff like this. It's very interesting but overwhelming if you try to think about it or change too much. For example, my kids can actually digest raw milk and raw milk products quite well but the FDA makes selling raw milk illegal so it's really hard to get your hands on (you can legally sell raw cheese so we do get that sometimes).
Yes, it is scary how little doctors know about nutrition. My younger daughter is very allergic to soy and throws up when I give her things with cow milk. She has been breastfed all along and at her 18 month well visit the doctor said since she is not drinking milk or soy milk I should start giving her formula. I left the fact suddenly giving a nursing toddler formula is really dumb alone and mentioned that all commercially baby formula has either soy or casein in it and he was completely surprised. Don't you think general knowledge of baby formula ingredients should be within a pediatricians field of knowledge?
Sort of a side track but have you ever tried So Delicious Coconut Milk ice cream? It is so good! The mango flavor is my favorite.
