I want to work but my senses are getting in the way
I want to work but my sensory problems get in the way. I used to work at a store and I was good at what I did. I need the ability to take breaks at random, shifts have to be short, and I cannot work nights.
I take breaks to clear my mind from the sound and lights. I can manage my senses better when I can do this. I can only tolerate a certain amount of stimuli. I work in the morning because my brain is refreshed.
If I cannot accommodate to my needs this leads to shut down, overstimulation, panic attacks and all together irrational behaviors.
Wearing glasses and putting on noise cancelation headphones are usually not an option especially when working with customers.
I really feel that I am in a pickle. Any suggestions?
Entry level job ideas would be helpful

RE: I want to work but my senses are getting in the way
Hi Lalay
Have you thought about contacting your state vocational rehabilitation services? They help people with disabilities find employment and help with strategies and resources that enable a person to work successfully and overcome disability related obstacles. I got help from my state vocational rehabilitation and it changed my life.
Here's a list of state by state services https://www.fda.gov/downloads/AboutFDA/w...277757.pdf
I hope this helps. Good luck on your job search

RE: I want to work but my senses are getting in the way
Hello, I'm new to this forum. Maybe someone has already talked about the Irlen syndrome. It mostly deals with light sensitivities. You can google Irlen syndrome and look at their questionnaire to see if their tinted glasses can make a difference. They block out ultraviolet lights that can cause distress, head aches etc. They also offer contacts! My children have the glasses and it helps. One of my girls says it helps her feel less angry. Hopes this helps!
