Who to approach concerning SPD?
Hello,
I was wondering who all of you approached when wanting to find out if you suffered from SPD, or if you had stumbled upon the term and then asked about it? I had never heard of it till the other day, but they all fit so well and it seems bizarre a medical professional has never brought it up. I was hoping to hear some input on it. Thanks all.

RE: Who to approach concerning SPD?
Hi Dave,
I found out about it because my physio suggested that he thought I was hypersensitive to pain. When I posted about this on facebook, my brother suggested to me that I look up SPD, as my nephew has mild autism and SPD. It was a revelation - suddenly my life made sense.
I went to my family doctor, asking for a referral to see an OT. He hadn't heard of SPD but when I explained a bit about it and said that OTs are the one who diagnose and treat, he was happy to write me a referral.
Make sure you find an OT who does treat it, but not just for kids.
I'm in Australia and my OT has said it's very little known about out here compared to America.

RE: Who to approach concerning SPD?
Since figuring out my husband and I are both Asperger's people, I read awhile on different aspects, back off, then come back to digest a little more. (Yes, I know not everyone who is SPD is on the autism spectrum. )
I'm wondering, also, who to approach to get an evaluation for my 71 y.o. husband. His balance has never been good, and having had a surgery induced stroke many years ago, his left side is partially paralyzed. However, his balance is only this year getting worse, and he's fallen twice this past week. My hope is that an OT could help his vestibular system? But I don't think our PCP is crazy about internet information, and would resist my effort to get him referred. And when I called a physical therapy center (didn't know what OT was all about then) they wouldn't take him w/o a doctor referral. Although our medicare/supplemental insurance lets us go wherever we please.
Actually, I don't know what I expect from you all. But it helps just to talk it out so thanks for listening! And it does help just seeing your experiences and knowing we are in good company.
