Hi all,
My name is Hope and I have a seven year old who has SPD. He was evaluated in pre k because the teacher said he had attention issues. At the evaluation they said he had SPD, but didn't really ellaborate and I kind of thought it was just what they called 'attention' problems when they weren't sure what to say
Anyway, since then he has been receiving OT through his elementary school but has continued to have focus issues. He has had a lot of trouble writing, reads very slowly and has low muscle tone. His teachers have been suggesting he has ADD. I have not been able to afford a neuro psych evaluation, but was able to get him into a study at a local college for SPD and ADD. We started the first of the three day process on Friday. I don't have any written reports, but so far they have confirmed that he has SPD. He has visual scanning issues with his reading, can not focus with any background noise, has motor planning issues, has a very heightened sense of smell and has trouble recognizing all the sounds in words when trying to write.
Anyway, I'm still in the middle of it and not sure what to do with all of this information. I now also suspect that my younger son has it too.
Other than that, my son loves to draw (and is very good at it!), is very social and very funny. I'm hoping that we find the right tools/ people to help him. I can see that he is shutting down at school already.
In addition to this, my son has a gastro intestinal disorder, food allergies and asthma. It's been a lovely, but rocky journey so far.
I'm happy to meet you all and learn more about SPD.
-Hope
