Hello i have just joined this forum and have been doing alot of research on SPD for my 4 soon to be 5 year old son.
There hasn't been any diagnosis for my son we have been brushed off by the pediatrician a few times which we are becoming very frustrated about.
I am from the UK and have gone through the SPD symptoms checklist on behalf of my little boy and 3/4 of the whole list up to grade schooler which is is now he fulfills.

To give you a better understanding...my son was always a bit "different" to that of a normal child of his age...he was a late babbler and talker (he still has a mild speech delay after a few months of speech therapy), he struggled with eye contact till recently, he was a later crawler and late walker (he was born with clubfoot but is fine now and you would never notice) and just displayed alot of the symptoms as a baby/toddler of that of a child with SPD.

When he begun preschool at 2 1/2 years old they picked up straight away that something wasnt right with my son and referred him to different professionals doing regular checks and meetings etc. they then referred him to the community pediatrician who referred him to a speech therapist...the second visit with the pediatrician was when he was about 3 1/2 years old...there were concerns from both us and his nursery teachers and autism was ringing alarm bells with us...his nursery teachers were so sure he had a learning disability but knew we would struggle to get a diagnosis as instead of typically being unsociable or aggressive with social skills and making friends...he is actually OVER FRIENDLY and is excitable. He doesnt struggle to make friends he has no personal spacial awareness and is a bit over the top with adults and children he is in their face wanting to talking to them, play with them and be touchy feely with them with anyone of any age!?

So the pediatrician diagnosed our son with a developmental/learning delay.
He was funded 12 hours from the government to have a specialized one on one teacher with him at all times in preschool who helped him come on leaps and bounds...his speech improved (although not enough) he progressed fastly but still not enough. Sadly the speech therapy stopped just before he began reception in primary school in September and the government rejected the application for a statement from his nursery and the educational psychologist as his "speech had improved and it seems he was improving" even though he wasnt near that of a child of his age!

Back to the present...when he began school i had meetings with his new teacher and the SENCO of the school about concerns with my sons development as the nursery had been in contact with them to express their worry too. SENCO lady put him on the SEN list and is classed as having SEN on his file. He just gets a bit more help from the assistant teacher but no one on one time which my son needs as he struggles to concentrate and learn in a busy group environment and does better one on one or in smaller groups.
He has improved as he should with a delay but his teacher is always raising concerns with me...how is emotional behavior is delayed to that of a 3 year olds...how he does well with logic and mathematics but is significantly delayed with his literacy..writing, reading, phonics, blending etc. They are in the midst of referring him back to his speech therapist as he isnt grasping blending and phonics and is behind the rest of his peers and she is concerned...but he probably wont get any help from his speech therapist till late 2015 with the system being so over worked!
I have had many meetings with his teacher and she says he does show traits of autism but his social skills are different where he doesnt mind playing on his own but loves to play with other children but can be isolated or pushed out as his is over friendly etc.
My sister who is an assistant teacher in a school who works with autistic children says my son reminds her alot of the children he works with and believes he has mild autism. We were certain it could be autism but there are many things he does that an autistic child wouldn't do!
His teacher handed me information about dyspraxia and said she wasnt very sure about this but to look into it...then i was thinking maybe it is this as he has been diagnosed as being slightly hyper mobile! But he hasnt got issues with pronouncing letters and likes to socialize where as his friend who has recently been diagnosed with dyspraxia is unsociable!

Me and my partner are getting so frustrated and feel we and everyone else is letting him down as with the right help he would be an amazing little boy even though in my eyes he is gifted in his own way and amazing to us regardless! We are waiting for an assessment with CAMHS who i believe will be useless with this situation...and he wont be seeing his pediatrician again for his annual review till mid 2015 which i cant wait for!

If i could put in simple terms as much as i can about how my son is to give you a rough a idea to see if you believe it is SPD or not:-

-He can be sensitive to stimulation or overreacts to touch, smells and especially certain noises he will say its too loud and hold his ears and cry or have a tantrum such as the shower, music, singing, people laughing, bells and sirens.
-He is easily distracted in the classroom etc. always in and out of his chair and he is ALWAYS fidgeting when standing up, sitting down he just cannot sit still unless he is very ill or very tired! He fidgets non stop!
-He is slow to perform certain tasks and can be very unwilling resulting in a tantrum.
-He has difficulty performing and can often avoid fine motor skills such as writing and drawing etc. which is is very behind on!
-He is clumsy, knocks alot of things over, stumbles often, always........
